G Diapers!

I was horrified to find out recently that a regular diaper takes 500 years to biodigrade. 500 years!!! That is crazy! Although I have not been the best at saving the planet or going green, that stat really got my attention.

I'm really not into the cloth diaper thing for completely selfish reasons. I don't want to wash them and we do not have a diaper service that is nearby. I did some research and the "planet friendly" diapers are very expensive. I found a bit of a hybrid between the regular diaper and the cloth diaper that is friendly to the planet, the G Diaper.

The G Diaper is a newer product and very fascinating. I have been rather obessed with them for the past few days while trying to figure out what they are and how they work. The cost is comparable to regular diapers and the covers are really cute.

After watching the video online of the baby's diaper being changed I thought, "I can do that." "That looks easy." Then I saw the video of the mom disposing of the diaper and I thought, "come again". I'm a bit of a germ a phobe and seeing her use the swish stick and talking about poopy diapers, um, I'm not so sure about that.

Now this is going to sound really bad but I'm not sure I would use these because it seems so much easier to slap on a pampers diaper and throw it away. On the other hand, when you think about it, we use a plastic diaper, then I would put it in a small plastic bag (scented), then when I got home I would put it in a the regular trash (also plastic) and throw away. Man, I'm so bad!

This is where I need your help blogger buddies. Have you ever used these or know someone who has? Do they like them? I'm interested in hearing from someone who has actually used them.

Anyone?

Another diaper company I found is bumgenius.com, they have kind of the same line of diapers, the covers are not near as pretty though!

Laura (http://jesuslovinmommaof2.blogspot.com/) uses them and has written a post about them. I also think the Silvestri's (http://littlesilvestriboy.blogspot.com/) use G's.

I am hoping that Sparrow is potty trained (many of the kids are by about 18 months if they are in the care center) so that I don't have to think about this... I don't know how open day care is to using non-disposable diapys.

You don't want my opinion on this...

Let's just say, I'm not drinking the kool-aid on the 500 yrs...

Lori,

I do want all opinions. I'm not sold one way or another that's why I wanted all of your opinions. I love a good controversy! :)

I am thinkinng about giving them a try. Gabre is between sizes, so I was going to wait until she is in the next size up. They sell them at our local HEB. You have HEB right?

I am understanding more and more why the Chinese put their young children in split pants. They simply go- and there is a bit of mopping up to do but no diapers, no cost, no waste.
Let me tell you how SHOCKING it was to this sheltered Westerner though seeing children all over Beijing walking and being toted around with their bums and their (ahem) fronts exposed!
It does solve a certain dilemma though! I guess this doesn't help you with your question, sorry!
I think that you have to take into account who will be caring for your baby during the bulk of the daytime hours- you (if so then you can do the Go Green diapers) or daycare provider- who may not be willing to go the extra mile in regards to saving the planet.
Oh and while those are some super cute diapers, most of the time the diapers don't show anyway, so don't let the cute factor weigh in too heavily!
Blessings on your search!

I'm not a fan of the g-diapers. I don't get the point. Cloth diapering seems easier in my opinion. I've always thought g-diapers were kind of a gimmick.

Cloth diapering isn't that bad I swear. There are diapers that fit your lifestyle and it doesn't have to be gross, I promise (unless you have a toddler with IBS, then it's gross). :)

Those are some cute diapers...I guess I should consider them :) Seriously though, we have been wrestling with this same decision.

I have used gdiapers but honestly I prefer plain ole cloth. Well, not plain but really cute cloth. :) I used cloth but not with the disposable insert only with a prefold (similar to what Tara does) It seriously isn't that bad. I love cloth diapering. My guy potty trained over the weekend and I'm kind sad to not have a bum to cloth diaper for a while. I can't honestly say that its that much for cost efficient because I'm a sucker for anything cute and there are some really cute cloth diapers out there. i have enough CD's to diaper 10 kids! :) I buy lots from HyenaCart.com because not only are they cute but they support WAHM's. If you or anyone else has any questions please ask me. I love to talk cloth! :)

All of my friends who use cloth say it's really not that big of a deal. I have one cloth-y friend who didn't like the g-dipes so much. If you decide to go with cloth and don't like it---they hold their value VERY well and you could easily sell them on craiglist/ebay--they would be snapped right up.

The debate about the ecology of the whole thing is understandable--since it takes energy to make and clean cloth diapers. In the end I decided that the landfill problem (not just the plastic, but all that human feces that's not going through the septic system) was a bigger issue for me.

We don't have a washer/dryer, so hopefully I won't lose my ever-loving mind!! :)

Also--all my friends RAVE about bum-genius dipes. :)

Amber! I just found diaper service in your area! And it serves Dallas too, oh joy.

it's called Green Baby Diaper Service. So check it out if you're interested. Using a diaper service is actually more "green."

it's greenbabydiaperservice.com

I just started cloth with my 20 month old knowing we would have another bum to diaper before too long. I have actually been shocked at how easy it is, and how much I enjoy it. However, I stay at home which translates to more time on my hands, in your case the diaper service might be the way to go!
